Are Subaru Vehicles Safe?

At Subaru, every aspect of our vehicles is designed with safety as a priority. From the placement of our exclusive SUBARU BOXER® engine to the ring-shaped reinforcement frame on each vehicle for greater high-impact protection, safety is quite literally built into every Subaru vehicle.

On top of these basics, we take pride in the thought and innovation that goes into additional active systems and features designed to enhance safety on every drive you take in your Subaru.

Read on to learn more about the Subaru safety features that set us apart from other vehicle manufacturers.

Subaru Safety Features

Our vehicles come equipped with cutting-edge safety technology, designed to help you remain comfortable, in control, and aware of your surroundings while you’re behind the wheel.

Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive

Perhaps no safety feature is more associated with the Subaru brand than our Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system. The Symmetrical AWD drivetrain that comes standard in all Subaru models (except the BRZ) plays an important role in how your vehicle handles challenging driving conditions.

Through ice and snow and over rugged stretches of road, our advanced Symmetrical AWD system is able to detect when a wheel begins to slip or lose traction and instantly delivers extra power and torque to that wheel alone to help prevent spinouts and offer continuous stability and control.

EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology

Our EyeSight Driver Assist Technology is like having a second pair of eyes on the road. Always scanning your surroundings—even blind spots—using a set of dual color cameras, EyeSight can notice potential hazards like pedestrians, nearby traffic, even road debris, and help you avoid them.

The Subaru EyeSight system contains a useful set of available features, such as Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Steering, Lane Departure and Sway Warning. Pre-Collision Brake Assist and Pre-Collision Throttle Management round out the impressive array of EyeSight features, designed to kick in when you need them most.

Rear Cross-Traffic Alert

Many Subaru vehicles feature radar sensors that provide enhanced all-around awareness when drivers are backing up. These sensors can detect oncoming traffic from either side when you are in reverse. The Rear Cross-Traffic Alert functionality offers visual and auditory indicators to notify you that other cars are approaching. For an added layer of protection, Subaru vehicles equipped with Reverse Automatic Braking can stop themselves automatically if they detect an imminent collision.

STARLINK® Safety and Security

In equipped vehicles, the SUBARU STARLINK® Safety and Security system can easily connect you to essential and emergency services. If you’re in distress, STARLINK can help you send and receive vital data over the on-board wireless network. The compatible MySubaru smartphone app allows you to operate STARLINK features to amplify your control, comfort, convenience and security systems.

SUBARU STARLINK offers a wide variety of features and capabilities, available on certain models and trims with a STARLINK annual subscription. Key features include:

  • Built-in buttons to access emergency SOS and roadside assistance

Subaru Vehicle Construction and Safety

The Subaru vehicle body design also plays a key role in making every ride you take safer. Our Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frame forms a “cage” around the cabin, bolstered by a pillar and frame. In the event of a high-impact crash, this frame is designed to absorb and evenly distribute the shock, regardless of any angle where a Subaru may be struck.

Subaru vehicles also incorporate additional passive safety features.

  • Thoughtful cabin design: Cabin components are made from shock-absorbing materials to reduce the likelihood of even small components harming drivers or passengers in the event of a crash.
  • Horizontally-opposed engine: Subaru strategically positions engines in our vehicles to better absorb impact if drivers are involved in an accident. In the event of a front-end collision, the engine can slip beneath the floor. This prevents it from potentially breaking through the cabin and injuring passengers in the event of an accident.
  • Strong side door beams: In addition to the Subaru Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frame, Subaru vehicles are equipped with a strong side door beam. This feature helps protect drivers and passengers in a T-bone or side collision.
